Solid Oak and Cream Colours Create Comfort in this Surrey Cottage Kitchen.

THE CHALLENGE

With a kitchen of over 15 years old, this Lyne couple contacted Kate Diss at Sanctuary Kitchens. “They felt that their kitchen had out grown them and no longer met their requirements. Sanctuary had installed a new bathroom in their house a couple of years ago and so they wanted to see whether we could come up with a new layout for their kitchen,” said Kate. Their main concerns were that the kitchen area had been added to the cottage many years ago and would originally have been the pathway to the coal bunker at the bottom of the garden so it was a long narrow building to work with. The brief was to provide a kitchen that felt spacious, not overpowered by tall cupboards and increase the percentage of storage in the kitchen so worktops could be clutter-free.

THE SOLUTION

“The client had their hearts set on oak and cream colours and solid oak shaker style units from Pyram which suited the cottage,” explains Kate. This meant the most obvious thing to do was to reverse the colour scheme and put oak units at the base and cream units for the wall and tall units. This gave a base foundation to the kitchen and having short lift-up wall units allowed for easy access and a more spacious feel to the room.

The lift-up wall units were fitted with servo drive, a system developed by Blum, to assist in the opening of units by pressing a button. “This was applied to both base and wall units which ensured the client wouldn’t need to stand on a chair to access her tall units like she used to in the past!” said Kate.

With storage solutions high on the client’s wish list, pull-out drawers in different heights were incorporated to ensure that storage was all in good reach and easy to organise. It also allowed for a very economic use of space, which meant that the worktops were clear, and clutter free.

Surfaces

The worktops chosen by the client were Cimstone, a quartz worktop that is stronger than Granite and none porous. “The finish on this worktop had a tiny sparkle, which gave a lovely glisten to the surface,” said Kate.

THE RESULT

Appliances

The old kitchen had a very low fitted canopy style extractor fan, which meant the client bumped his head every time he went to cook. “Together, we decided to install the new angled design of the Fantasia by Elica, which are perfect for tall people who like to cook,” explains Kate.

A new 45cm slim line dishwasher from Miele with it’s combined quietness and efficiency was a must for this kitchen, as the client had never had a dishwasher! The M touch range from Miele gave the client her opportunity to practice her culinary skills and a Steam/Microwave combination oven was also added to their appliance range making the best use of the available space.

“We had used Sanctuary Bathrooms and were so pleased with the service that we wanted to use the same company again. We were 100% happy with the result and would definitely recommend Sanctuary Kitchens to our friends.”
